A megaparsec (symbol: Mpc) is a unit of length equal to one million parsecs, or approximately 3.086×10²² metres (about 3.26 million light-years). It is a standard unit in extragalactic astronomy and cosmology, used to express distances between galaxies and galaxy clusters. In 1799, the metre was redefined in terms of a prototype metre bar (the actual bar used was changed in 1889). In 1960, the metre was redefined in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of a certain emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, the current definition was adopted.
