What it does

A Markdown table is rows of cells separated by | with a line of dashes under the header. Colons in that line set the alignment: :--- left, :---: centre, ---: right. The generator pads every column so the table also reads well as plain text, escapes any | inside a cell and keeps wide characters such as Chinese aligned.

How to use it

  1. Type in the grid, or paste cells from a spreadsheet or CSV and press Import.
  2. Choose the alignment of each column.
  3. Copy the Markdown for GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian or a README.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Markdown table have merged cells?
No. GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables have no merged cells or multi-line cells; for that, use an HTML table inside the Markdown.

How do I put a | inside a cell?
Escape it as \|. The generator does this for you when a cell contains a pipe.
