A ton of refrigeration (symbol: TR or RT) is a unit of power equal to the rate of heat absorption required to melt one short ton (2,000 lb) of ice in 24 hours, defined as exactly 12,000 BTU/h or approximately 3,516.85 watts. It is the standard unit for rating the cooling capacity of air conditioners and refrigeration systems in North America. One ton of refrigeration equals 3.51685 kilowatts.
