Speech to Text

Free speech to text: dictate in over 100 languages and dialects, with spoken punctuation, copy or save the text. Recognition can run on your device in Chrome.

πŸ”’ The speech is recognised by your browser's own service, not by fredtools.net: we never receive your voice or your text. In Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to Google or Microsoft to be recognised, unless “on this device” is ticked; Safari uses Apple's service.

Transcribe an audio file

The file is played to the recogniser in real time, so 10 minutes of audio take 10 minutes. Clear speech with little background noise gives the best text.

What it does

This page turns your voice into text with the speech recognition built into the browser. Speak naturally and the words appear as you talk; when you pause, the sentence is fixed and added to the text, which you can edit, copy or save. In English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian you can also dictate punctuation such as comma, question mark and new line.

How to use it

  1. Choose the language you will speak in.
  2. Click Start dictation, allow the microphone and speak. Say “comma” or “period” for punctuation.
  3. Click Stop, correct the text if needed, and copy it or download it as .txt.

Frequently asked questions

Is my voice sent to a server?
Not to ours. The recognition is done by the browser: in Chrome and Edge the audio goes to Google's or Microsoft's speech service, as with voice typing on a phone. In recent Chrome versions you can tick “on this device” and download the language once; then the audio does not leave the computer.

Which browsers work?
Dictation works in Chrome, Edge and Safari, on computers and phones. Firefox has no speech recognition. Transcribing a file needs a recent Chrome or Edge on a computer.

Why does it stop by itself?
The browser closes the session after a long silence or about a minute of speech; the page starts it again automatically while dictation is on. If it keeps stopping, check that the right microphone is selected in the browser settings.

How do I add punctuation?
In English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian, say the punctuation mark: “comma”, “period”, “question mark”, “new line”, “new paragraph” and so on (the list for the chosen language is shown above the text). In other languages, add it by editing the text.

Is there a time limit?
No. You can dictate for as long as you want and the text is kept in this browser if you reload the page. For files, the transcription takes as long as the recording.
