Frequently asked questions
How is the background removed?
The page estimates the brightness of the paper across the photo, so shadows and uneven light cancel out, and then separates the ink from the paper with an automatic threshold (Otsu's method). The edges of the strokes stay smooth.
The result has spots or missing strokes. What can I do?
Move the slider to the left to clean up spots, or to the right to keep faint strokes. Cropping tightly around the signature also helps, and a photo with even light works best.
Does it work with a scanned signature?
Yes: scans and photos in JPG, PNG or WebP all work. Large photos are reduced to 2,000 pixels on the longer side, which is more than enough for a document.
