VAT Calculator

VAT and sales tax calculator: add tax to a net price, remove tax from a price that already includes it, or find the rate between net and gross prices.

What it does

Value added tax (VAT, IVA, MwSt, TVA, GST) and sales tax are percentages charged on a price. Adding them is a simple multiplication, but removing them from a price that already includes them is where most mistakes happen: you have to divide by 1 plus the rate, not subtract the percentage. This calculator does the three operations: add the tax, remove it, and find the rate from the two prices.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether you want to add the tax, remove it, or find the rate.
  2. Type the price and the tax rate of your country or product.
  3. Read the price with and without tax, and the amount of tax.

The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. With 23% VAT, a price of 123 becomes 123 ÷ 1.23 = 100, and the tax is 23. Subtracting 23% from 123 gives 94.71, which is wrong, because the 23% was calculated on 100 and not on 123.

Which tax rate should I use?
The rate depends on the country and often on the product: many countries have a standard rate and reduced rates for food, books or medicines. Some standard VAT rates: Germany 19%, France 20%, the UK 20%, Spain 21%, Italy 22%, Portugal 23% and Sweden 25%. Rates change from time to time, so check the current one with your tax authority.

What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
VAT is charged at every stage of production and sale, and businesses deduct the tax they paid on their purchases; the final consumer pays the whole amount. Sales tax, as in most US states, is charged only once, on the final sale. For the arithmetic on a price, both work the same way.

Does the calculator work with any currency?
Yes. It does not use any currency: type the numbers in the currency you want and the results come out in the same one.
