Voice Recorder & Mic Test
Free online voice recorder and microphone test: see the level meter, listen to yourself and save MP3 or WAV. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
What it does
This page records your microphone and saves the result as MP3 or WAV. It also works as a microphone test: the level meter shows how loud the signal is in dBFS, the waveform shows what is being recorded, and you can listen to yourself through headphones. The MP3 is encoded while you speak, so even an hour-long recording does not fill up the memory.
How to use it
- Click "Allow microphone" and accept the browser's permission prompt.
- Speak and watch the meter: the bar should stay mostly in the green and yellow, without touching the red.
- Click Record, then Stop. Listen to the take and download it as MP3 or WAV.
Frequently asked questions
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. The browser captures the microphone and the MP3 is encoded on your own computer. Nothing is sent to our server, and the recording disappears when you close the tab unless you download it.
How do I test my microphone?
Allow the microphone and speak normally. If the bar moves, the microphone works. Around −20 dB is a good level for speech; if it hits 0 dB and turns red, the sound clips, so move away or lower the input volume in your system settings.
MP3 or WAV?
MP3 is much smaller and plays everywhere; 128 kbps is plenty for voice. WAV is uncompressed, about 5 MB per minute in mono, and is better if you will edit the audio afterwards.
Should I turn off noise suppression?
For calls and voice notes, keep it on. To record music or to hear exactly what the microphone picks up, turn off noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain.
The browser does not ask for permission. What now?
You probably blocked the microphone for this site earlier. Click the icon to the left of the address bar, allow the microphone and reload the page. On a Mac, also check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
