What it does
Overtime is paid for the hours above the regular working time at a higher rate. The most common rule is time and a half: each extra hour is paid at 1.5 times the normal rate, and some hours, such as Sundays or public holidays, may be paid at double time. This calculator splits your hours into regular and overtime and adds up the gross pay before tax.
How to use it
- Enter your hourly rate and the hours you worked in the week (or in the day).
- Set the regular hours before overtime starts (40 a week in the USA, 8 a day in many countries) and the overtime multiplier.
- If some overtime hours are paid at double time, enter how many, and read the gross pay.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is overtime always time and a half?
No, it depends on the country and the contract. In the USA, the federal Fair Labor Standards Act requires at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek; in Brazil the minimum is 50% more, and 100% is common on Sundays and holidays. Collective agreements can set higher rates.
How do I find my hourly rate from a monthly salary?
Divide the monthly salary by the hours you are paid for in a month. For 40 hours a week that is about 173.33 hours (40 × 52 ÷ 12); in Brazil a 44-hour week is counted as 220 hours a month.
