Sizes inside the .ico

What it does

ICO is the Windows icon format, still used for favicon.ico and for desktop shortcuts. One .ico file holds several sizes of the same picture, and Windows or the browser picks the one that fits. This converter puts each chosen size inside the file as a PNG, which keeps transparency and works in Windows Vista and later and in every browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG image.
  2. Tick the sizes you want inside the .ico (16, 32 and 48 are the usual ones).
  3. Download the .ico file.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes should an .ico have?
For a favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels. For a Windows application or shortcut icon, add 256 (and 24 and 64 if you want the small views to look sharp).

Which files do I really need?
favicon.ico at the root of the site covers every browser. The 180 pixel apple-touch-icon.png is what iPhones and iPads show on the home screen, and the 192 and 512 pixel PNGs with the web manifest are what Android uses. The ZIP has them all.

Why does the Apple touch icon have a background?
iOS fills transparent areas of the touch icon with black and rounds the corners itself, so that icon is always made square and opaque, with white behind it when you chose a transparent background.

What image works best?
A square logo or symbol with few details, at least 512 pixels or as an SVG. Text and thin lines disappear at 16 pixels; check the 16 and 32 pixel previews, and use the margin if the shape touches the edges.

My new favicon does not show up. Why?
Browsers keep favicons in a cache for a long time. Open favicon.ico directly in the browser, reload it, or test in a private window; search engines may take days or weeks to show the new icon.

Is my image uploaded?
No. The icons are drawn and the files are made in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
