What it does
The profit on a stock trade is what you receive when you sell minus everything you paid: the price of the shares and the fees on both sides. The return is that profit as a percentage of what you paid, and the annual return spreads it over the years you held the shares, so trades of different lengths can be compared.
How to use it
- Enter the buy and sell prices per share and the number of shares.
- Add the fees you paid when buying and selling, and the years you held the shares if you want the annual return.
- For the average price, list each purchase; to average down, add the current price and the average you want.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Do dividends count in the profit?
Not in this calculator, which only looks at the buy and sell prices. To include them, add the dividends you received to the sell side, or use the dividend calculator to see how much they add over the years.
Is the result before or after tax?
Before tax. How gains are taxed depends on the country, the amount and how long you held the shares; subtract the tax from the profit shown here.
