Tile Calculator
Free tile calculator: how many floor or wall tiles you need for an area, from the tile size, grout joint and waste, with the number of boxes to buy.

What it does
Each tile takes up its own size plus the grout joint around it, so the calculator divides the area by that slightly larger rectangle and rounds up. The waste allowance covers tiles cut at the edges and breakages: 10% for straight layouts, 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
How to use it
- Enter the length and width of the floor or wall.
- Enter the tile size, the grout joint and the waste allowance.
- Add the number of tiles per box to see how many boxes to buy.
The arithmetic runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere and nothing is stored, so you can use these with real numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
About 10% for a simple straight layout and 15–20% for diagonal layouts, large tiles or rooms with many corners. Keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch also helps with future repairs.
Does the grout joint change the count?
A little: a 3 mm joint on 60 cm tiles makes each tile cover about 1% more area. With small mosaic tiles and wide joints the difference is much larger.
